GEN4121 Theological Orientation is a 12-credit course that runs throughout SATS’ academic calendar. This is the first course in the BTh Honours Programme. It is also a course for new Masters' and Doctoral degree students. Outcomes

On successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of the history and foundational principles of SATS, as well as of some of the people involved in establishing and growing the institution;
  2. access and use SATS’ online services;apply current knowledge about the nature and challenges of advanced online studies; and
  3. apply principles and practices of advanced theological research in prescribed formats of academic writing.

Course Introduction 

In this course you will thoroughly and systematically study a specific theological topic. 

Purpose of the course 

• To expose you to standard and current scholarship in a specific academic field. 

• To develop your ability to interpret these academic resources on your own and to present these findings orally. 

Course Outcome

By the end of this course, you should to be able to: 

• demonstrate your ability to work through resources on you own and to master its contents. 

• analyse, compare and apply what you have learnt. 

• effectively communicate your views on a focused body of scholarly literature during the oral assessment.

This course will give you an introduction to missiology that is not limited to the “biblical foundation of mission” or to a pragmatic “how to” approach of “doing mission”, but which combines these (and other) key dimensions of missiology in an integrated perspective. It also combines the dimensions of spirituality and practical planning. 

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the understanding of Christian mission as God’s mission
  • Explain the “praxis matrix” approach to missiology
  • Analyse the mission practices of a Christian movement
  • Demonstrate the impact of the praxis matrix on your own missiological approach and mission experiences

This course presupposes that you have already completed at least one introductory course about Islam, so that you have a broad, foundational understanding of Islam. In this course, you will be afforded an opportunity to select ONE controversial topic related to Islam to research in some depth. The essence of the course, therefore, takes the form of researching and writing a paper on a topic related to Islam. You will need to select and delimit the topic, read as much as you can about it, and then write a well-argued research paper.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the history, theology, and praxis of Islam in relation to a selected focus area.
  • Write well-argued, well-informed research papers about Islamic themes from a Christian perspective.

This course is designed to teach you how to successfully conduct theological research at the Bachelor of Theology Honours level. If you ever decide to pursue a Masters or Doctoral degree, you will be introduced to more in-depth research tools and methodologies. 

This module is compulsory for all students who wish to enrol for the BTh Honours research project (RES4241).

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to demonstrate the following research skills:

    • Define research in a way that demonstrates understanding of its characteristics.
    • Explain how to develop a healthy professional relationship with your supervisor.
    • Accurately describe all the component parts of a research proposal.
    • Formulate a feasible and focused research problem statement for a Bachelor of Theology Research project (to the satisfaction of your supervisor).
    • Design a research plan for a BTh Honours Research project that contains a suitable outline, research methodology, and annotated bibliography.
    • Compile a literature review.
    • Conduct field research.
    • Implement the principles of academic writing in your research proposal and your BTh honours research project.

There are many courses offering guidance on how to engage with children, whether in the context of the family, school, church or community. This course is different in that it rather focuses on a deeper question, namely 

What would be a proper biblical-theological understanding of children and childhood?

It works with the assumption that such an understanding would lead to a new appreciation for children and childhood, and find expression in better ways of interacting with children. In this course, we explore the intersection between children, the Bible, and theology.
